Ian and Jenn Stephens are missionaries working with C.H.I.P.S, Children HIV Intervention Programme in Swaziland, to help the orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS pandemic in Swaziland, Africa. Their home base is in Vuvulane and they travel around to various communities testing for HIV, assessing medical needs and treatment options, teaching job skills, providing workshops, and occasionally conducting Crossroads training (character building/positive living/HIV & abstinence). Ian and Jenn's main desire is to share the love of Jesus for each of these precious children while working towards fulfilling the vision of a HIV free Swaziland.

Looking innocent...

Fanzile was waiting for us at one of the recent community meetings trying to look as forlorn as possible. In reality, he was just fine and hoping for some pocket money!
Look at Vusile, doesn't he look good?
And here he is walking around and getting into mischief! See that smirk on his face? He has grown up so much and has overcome so many obstacles in his life. You can see a picture of Vusile here when we first met him back in the summer of 2010.

In the last couple of weeks, a young mom-to-be, 6 months pregnant, try to kill herself because her boyfriend was cheating on her. They are trying to work it out. Please pray that this would draw them to God and that they would turn to Him as the answer to their problems. Our heart goes out to this young couple.

Eric loves school!

Eric came to visit us the other day. He was so happy and loves the school, the discipline, and the subjects. Eric was telling us how he earns money to pay the $1 a day bus fares; he goes fishing on Saturday and Sunday afternoon and what he catches he sells. The school he goes to does not provide free lunch like the government schools do so some of the teachers have got together to provide him some food at lunch time. Eric does not live in his circumstances as he knows God has a wonderful future for him and he has to dream big in the Lord.

We, along with Eric, are very thankful for a generous friend who has provided the scholarship money so that Eric can attend school. Please continue to pray for Eric that the Lord will help him with his studies and will guide Eric every step of the way.

Community Meetings

The main thing that we have been doing lately is community meetings. We go into each community that we serve to explain that Chips was started in 2008 because of the high death rate among children birth to 5 years of age. After a few months, Chips expanded to include adult caregivers in order to reduce the numbers of OVC's (orphaned and vulnerable children).  The criteria for adults to be in the program is being HIV+ and a parent/guardian.

Chips responsibilities include PMTCT (Preventing Mother to Child Transmission), home visits, assessments on sick clients, spiritual support, and transport to the hospital/clinic for appointments.  This is all done with the assumption that our clients take responsibility in being on time at the designated stations, to furnish us with their next appointment, and if they miss the transport, they have to get themselves to the hospital/clinic for their check-up. We also explain that Chips will not pay a client's hospital bills or funeral expenses nor is Chips a general ambulance service.

Another thing that Chips assists with is emergencies. This is an ongoing issue that must be cleared up with the people who like to call an 'emergency' for things like falling down and hurting a knee or a headache. We consider an emergency to be one of these situations, moms in labor, dehydration, seizures, breathing problems and a fever.

We finish the meetings by saying Chips is a privilege and if is abused, we could run out of funds to continue providing service. Through Chips, the clients have the privilege to receive food parcels, clothing, and blankets as we can. The meetings are well attended and we get good questions. One question that comes up often is asking if the rural health motivators are paid and the people seem surprised to find out that the rural health motivators do it out of love. Our rural health motivators are the eyes and ears of Chips in each community, alerting us to people who need our help or any issues that are going on.  They also serve as a reminder to clients to take the medications, eat, and take responsibility for themselves.

One reason for these talks is that people move around a lot so we always have new folks.  There are a good percentage of clients who are very responsible for their health care but then we have the others who will call Jabulane or Mary at 2am with a fake emergency.  Our hope is that if everyone hears the same message they will start to take more responsibility for their own health.

After the meeting at Section 19, a Gogo (grandmother) came up to us and asked us to look at her grandson. She had taken him to 2 or3 different clinics in a month and was now out of money and he wasn't better. He had a painful tumor in his groin and was unable to walk. We did go and assessed him and told the Gogo that  we would transport him to the hospital. The little guy had had surgery and now he is doing fine.  When we went back to check on him later the Gogo was overjoyed and so thankful to God for the people in America who made this possible. We just wanted to tell you this wonderful story to show how you are impacting lives here.  The boy should be back in school in about 3 weeks. Thanks for making stories like this happen! We couldn't do what we do without your help.

Several prayer requests and a couple of praises!

 Prayer Requests:
  • Frank from Section 19 is 32 years old and is very sick with TB. This is his 2nd TB infection in 2 years. Please pray that his body would be strengthened and he would be able to fight off this infection and come to know the ultimate Healer.
  • Gabsile is a single mom with three young children who lives in Vuvulane. She is very sick with multiple medical problems relating to her HIV status.  Gabsile just started ARV's and will start an intensive 12 week chemo program.  Please pray that she will have the strength from God to help her through the difficult times ahead. We did pray with her and she does know the Lord.
  • The Simunye church is no longer able to provide food parcels to Chips to hand out due to the recession. We use the food parcels to try and help sustain the new Chips clients who have just started their ARV's. All of our Antiretroviral Treatment patients need to eat with their medication. Please pray that the Lord will provide the much needed food so that our clients can take their medicine at the appropriate times.
  • Please pray for us as we are preparing for our long trip. We will leave for the UK at the beginning of March.
  • We are still looking to God to arrange all the details of Jenn's knee surgery (insurance, finding a doctor/surgeon, timing etc.), would you lift that up in prayer?
Praises:
  • We saw Julia yesterday she is doing so much better that's a praise report!
  • Eric is now enrolled in Mhulme High School with thanks to the assistant head teacher who was very helpful.
  • We've heard from 3 churches State side that want us to come speak while we are back! That is a blessing, and we still have lots of available dates to come speak with your church or group. Just contact us if you would like us to come share about Swaziland and what God is doing here.
